National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS)
NIMS issued four new data sheets on March 31, 2015.
Abstract
National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS, President: Sukekatsu Ushioda) published the following four issues of data sheets on March 31, 2015.
(1) First revision of Creep Data Sheet No. 50 in 11 years! First ever publication of the world’s longest rupture lifetime data.
“NIMS CREEP DATA SHEET No. 50A: Long-term creep rupture data obtained after the publication of the final edition of the creep data sheet”
At NIMS, we conduct long-term creep tests in which we measure the amount of deformation and time to rupture on 68 different metal materials by heating them to high temperature and applying a load to them. Of materials that did not rupture by the time the final edition of the creep data sheet was published, data were collected on 30 of them after the publication and were compiled in the first edition2) of NIMS CREEP DATA SHEET No. 50 published in 2004. Further collection of test data on materials that ruptured during the past 11 years were published in this edition, No. 50A. This edition covers the world’s longest rupture lifetime record of about 40 years, and the cumulative test duration of about 3,378 years.
(2) Addition to the aluminum alloy fatigue data sheets.
“NIMS FATIGUE DATA SHEET No. 119: Data sheets on gigacycle fatigue properties of A5083P-O (Al-4.5Mg-0.6Mn) aluminum alloy plates”
Aluminum alloy that is used in transport equipment is associated with an issue of being subject to fatigue (gigacycle fatigue) caused by repeated exposure (more than 10 billion cycles) to small loads. This time, we measured the gigacycle fatigue properties of aluminum alloy A5083 during exposure to up to 10 billion cycles using three kinds of testing equipment.
(3) Two new datasheets added to space use materials strength data sheets
(Collaboration with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA, President: Naoki Okumura))
“NIMS SPACE USE MATERIALS STRENGTH DATA SHEET No. 23: Data sheet on fracture toughness and high-cycle fatigue properties of Ti-6Al-4V ELI alloy (φ300mm forging) at cryogenic temperatures”
“NIMS SPACE USE MATERIALS STRENGTH DATA SHEET No. 24: Data sheet on fracture toughness and high-cycle fatigue properties of Alloy 718 (1338K solution treatment) base metal and welded joints”
We published data sheets on the high-cycle fatigue properties of Ti-6Al-4V ELI alloy, which is planned to be used in the engine for the next flagship launch vehicle, and of nickel-based heat-resistant Alloy 718 plates, which have been used in the engines for the existing flagship launch vehicles (H2A and H2B).
Previously issued data sheets have been frequently referred to as standard data for conducting strength design and selecting materials in various fields. We hope that the abovementioned new publications will also be used widely.
