Title

Viscoelastic analysis of polymeric materials by AFM

Abstract

We have engaged on atomic force microscopy (AFM) nanomechanics for years, which offers quantitative mechanical property mapping at nanoscale especially for soft polymeric materials. The technique measures force-deformation curves on the surfaces of soft polymeric materials. Hertzian, Derjaguin-Muller-Toporov (DMT), Johnson-Kendall-Roberts (JKR) elastic contact mechanics are used to successfully reproduce the experimental curves. We also utilize the force-mapping technique for obtaining a two-dimensional map of mechanical properties, such as the elastic modulus and adhesive energy. However, existing contact mechanics is basically for purely elastic materials and the application of such theories is limited for viscoelastic materials. In this talk, we show several example studies on highly-viscoelastic rubbery specimens such as styrenebutadiene rubber (SBR) and further introduce the attempt to extend the technique to viscoelastic contact.
