Application of Environmental TEM in Bio-science and Contrast Enhancement using Phase Plate

Abstract

Electron microscopy is a powerful tool to study structures of nano-materials. Environmental TEM (E-TEM) is at the forefront of providing new observational capabilities in many research methods. E-TEM can visualize materials in gas or liquid environment at nano-scales. This enables us to investigate structures of the functional materials under their operational environment and such demands would widely spread especially in bio-science. In the present paper some examples of E-TEM observations of materials in wet environment will be introduced. In observations of biomaterials, contrast enhancement is also a key issue because they are composed of light elements which provide very weak image contrast. Contrast enhancement using phase plate will be also discussed.
