Operando characterization of internal electrical potential distribution and Lithium distribution at the cross section of all-solid-state Lithium-ion batteries

All-solid-state lithium-ion batteries are expected as the next generation energy storage devices. This battery has a problem that the power density decreases due to the high ionic resistivity at the electrode-solid electrolyte interface. To clarify the origin of the interfacial resistivity, there is a demand for a method for operando measurements of the electrical potential distribution and the lithium-ion distribution inside the battery. In this presentation, I will introduce the cross section process of the battery devices using Ar ion beam and the cross-sectional operando characterizations (the potential distribution measurement using scanning Kelvin probe force microscopy [1] and the lithium ion distribution measurement using time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS ) [2]). I will also summarize the research for four and a half years at NIMS.
