Abstract
- As the "International Development of Knowledge" in the Fifth Science and Technology Innovation Basic Plan, along with international collaborative research, open science, intellectual property strategies, etc., promotion of international standardization is being stated. International standardization activities are important for Japan, the industrial nation, and it goes without saying that it plays the core of a long-term innovation strategy. At the advanced seven countries (G7) summit held in Versailles in 1982, it was decided to promote an international collaborative project (Versailles Project on Advanced Materials and Standard) to conduct pre-standardization research on advanced materials and test evaluation. Over the past 30 years, NIMS, the core organization of material research, has been the core of all Japan's VAMAS activities since the era of the predecessor National Research Institute for Metals. Here, we look at the VAMAS activities from the past to the present. Furthermore, I would like to outline the prospects of VAMAS and the role that NIMS should play in contributing to the standardization of advanced materials and test methods.
- The activities for the international standardization of ISO/TC201 (surface chemical analysis) and ISO/TC202 (microbeam analysis) started according to the proposal of Japanese government at the ISO Technical Board held at Zurich on March 14, 1991. The proposal that Japan was ready to organize ISO/TC (surface chemical analysis) was then approved.
The background that had led to the proposal is briefly overviewed by focusing on the activities of the JSPS-141 Committee (microbeam analysis ), in particular, on EPMA and SIMS.
