First NIMS-IRC Nanotechnology Summer School was held at NIMS
2004.07.26
First NIMS-IRC Nanotechnology Students' Summer School was held in NIMS from 26 to 30 July 2004.
The Interdisciplinary Research Collaboration in Nanotechnology was funded at Cambridge in 2002 by EPSRC, BBSRC, MRC and the MoD. The University of Cambridge, University College London and the University of Bristol are members (http://www.nanoscience.cam.ac.uk/). 18 graduate students, 2 professors and 1 laboratory manager of the IRC stayed in NIMS for a week. The UK students, mixed with 18 NIMS graduate students, gave talks on their research topics to exchange up-to-date knowledge and opinions. Two best speakers, i.e., Ms. Yukiko Tsuda (Biomaterials Centre/Tsukuba University) and Ms. Ghim Wei Ho (Cambridge University), received 'Welland-Aono Award'. The participants made a laboratory tour to observe cutting-edge facilities and detailed experimental techniques.
In addition to academic activities, the participants deepened a friendship between the two institutions through a football match, Mt. Tsukuba excursion and NIMS Beer party etc. After IRC students won the seesaw football game (IRC 3-2 NIMS), 'Kishi Cup' flew to UK.
The second summer school is going to be held at Cambridge, England in next summer.
NIMS is arranging such opportunities for graduate students to educate future world-leading researchers through multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural experiences.
