(July 10, 2009) The “3rd Monozukuri Nippon Grand Award,” was announced recently by four Ministries led by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI).
A venture group launched by NIMS, including Oxide Corporation (3 persons; NIMS Fellow Kitamura, etc.) and SWING, Ltd. (5 persons; President Furukawa, etc.), received the “Monozukuri Nippon Grand Award, Special Prize.”
The “Monozukuri Nippon Grand Award” is given under the Prime Minister’s commendation system to key human resources and others who play core roles in actual manufacturing and production sites, in order to support the growth of Japanese industry and culture, and ensure that Japan’s unique “monozukuri” (manufacturing) techniques, which have made a large contribution to the affluent life of the Japanese people, are passed on to future generations and continue to be developed.
This award recognized “High performance optical single crystals produced by defect control growth method and commercialization of optical devices using the crystals,” and highly evaluated the group’s results in the development of a crystal manufacturing device incorporating a high accuracy weight detection system, high precision automatic diameter control system, and precision raw material powder supply system, all of which are technologies based on result of research and development by NIMS. The establishment of a high yield polarization reversal technology and their development to a practical-level crystal and device manufacturing technology are also highly evaluated.
