NIMS Fellow Dr. Ushioda Nominated as IUPAP President!

Dr. Sukekatsu Ushioda, Fellow of the National Institute for Materials Science and Associate Member of the Science Council of Japan, has recently been nominated as President of The International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP).

  1. Dr. Sukekatsu Ushioda, Fellow of the National Institute for Materials Science (President: Prof. Teruo Kishi) and Associate Member of the Science Council of Japan, has recently been nominated as President of The International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP). He is the second Japanese to be nominated as President of IUPAP since it was established in 1922. His term is scheduled to be from October 2008 to September 2011.

    His nomination will be officially approved at the 26th General Assembly of IUPAP to be held at the NIMS Sengen Site from October 13 to 17, 2008.
  2. IUPAP is an organization composed of physics societies around the world and serves rather like the United Nations in the world of physics. IUPAP has a major influence through its announcements and activities. Its main purposes include the following: to promote international cooperation in physics; to organize and sponsor international conferences in the field of physics; to form international agreements on physical constants; to promote free exchange among scientists; and to promote research and education in physics. Currently, 48 countries or territories are members.

    Japan joined IUPAP when it was established in 1922, and the Science Council of Japan is currently the organization that represents Japan.
  3. The 26th General Assembly of IUPAP is going to be held as follows. At this General Assembly, NIMS Fellow Dr. Sukekatsu Ushioda will be officially approved as IUPAP President and major policies on its activities such as international physics research support and cooperation will be discussed.
